SOW It and Let It Grow, the theme of the new Issey Miyake autumn/winter 2022 collection, and the launch of Rhizome knit.
The collection follows wild nature trails as an exploration of plants takes centre form this season. By channelling their natural beauty, the cycle of growth, like seed germinating and development, to a journey of roots and sprouts, this collection captures the essence of breaking out and heading towards the light. Something we could all use a dose of this dreary time of year.

The design and curating process follows closely to that of fruition, as if an untamed lively plant, for unique and irregular silhouettes are expressed using bright, saturated colour palettes and a variety of tactile textures.
The boldest blossom of this collection features Rhizome, the new seamless knit that perfectly embodies the theme of this season. Miyake proudly presents this new venture in such a way that is inspired by the documentation of roots and stems growing freely in every direction.

Garments come knitted with woollen yarn and carry a lightweight, breezy finish to compliment the multiuse design patterns throughout. Root-like expressions hang freely from the items, to insinuate further the element of wear it how you like. For example, they can be effortlessly placed around the waist or neck to create a unique style and an encouragement towards individuality.

“Rhizome what a beautiful idea for a collection, so when Issey Miyake approached me to do the campaign I was truly excited. I wanted to make a film that would enhance the garments through contemporary dancers. We developed a story that starts with the dancers joined together asleep. As the dancers awake and peel away, they run to the forest leaving a brightly coloured single Rhizome [represented by a female dancer]. She awakes, she’s alone! As the dancers perform in the forest the Rhizome in the field calls the others back, she needs the others to be a complete Rhizome.” – Marcus Tomlinson 2022
