NWFW SS20: GCDS

CO-FOUNDER and creative director of streetwear brand GCDS, Giuliano Calzo, turned back the clock at NYFW with an emphasis on 90s nostalgia. Inspired by film noir, childhood magic and imagination, Calzo created a dynamic two-part show to showcase his vibrant AW19 collection. While the first half presented classic GCDS styles that evoke an essence of dynamic youth, the second half reflected the dark results of society’s oppressive nature on creativity.

Teddy Quinlivin ensured the show delivered its powerful message of youthful rebellion with a punch as the first to storm the runway. She modeled a single shouldered shimmery gold playsuit, opaque tights and black wait belt, both of which were emblazoned with the GCDS logo.

Recently announced as leading a Chanel beauty campaign, 25-year-old Quinlivin is a familiar face for Glass, having graced the cover of issue 35 in 2018. TedTalk extraordinaire, the model is the ideal muse for Calzos daring concepts.

Energetic patterns, bold tailoring, loud palettes and prints are a just few of the design techniques Calvo worked into the presentation of each look. Similarly to previous collections, Calvo incorporated graphic prints alongside the recurring presence of the GDSC logo. Alton Mason embodied these core elements, sporting a half-zipped light brown faux fur sweater on top of a flax coloured jumpsuit. His accessories included a matching duffle and mustard leather loafers.

In keeping with the throwback theme of GCDS, the collection included a collaboration with iconic 90s cartoon stars, Jessica Rabbit. Known for her sensuality, Jessica Rabbit was not only featured on the various prints during the show, but was clear influence on the latter half of the show with the red latex, thickly winged eyeliner and dramatic wigs.
