NYFW SS20: Oscar de La Renta

JOURNEYING back to the Latin roots of Oscar de La Renta, the SS20 collection, designed by Creative Directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, was a runway of ruffles. Founded in 1965 by Dominican Republican Oscar de La Renta, the brand has always encapsulated a Latin sensibility with a grandiose flair and has been known for its enduring style ever since de La Renta became a couturier for Jackie Kennedy in the ‘60s.

Folds of fabric cascaded onto the catwalk in graceful golds and pinks, rippling with the models’ movement. Alongside ruffles, bows and floral motifs were an unchanging focus of the show. One floor length black dress was embroidered with flowers and leaves and another had crocheted black and white flowers with a tasselled hem.

Candice Swanepoel wore a tulle dress in a delicate nude, gathered at the top of the thigh. Embroidered flowers climbed up the side of the dress, winding around the waist and onto the bodice.

A resplendent look in metallic bronze, with pleated fabric, drew the eye to the models’ face which was kept natural, with minimal make up. Radiant skin shone threw, with just a coating of mascara and gentle brow definition.

The final look was showcased by Irina Shayk who closed the show in an elegant black ruffled dress. The collection was a nod to the heritage of Oscar de La Renta, without losing sight of the present.
