UTILITY-WEAR and minimalism were the major themes at Max Mara SS20. Actually inspired by the hit TV-drama Killing Eve, the wardrobe is a homage to the strength and power femininity can bring.
The show began with three models, including Max Mara’s favourite Gigi Hadid, walking in unison in different variations of a grey utility short-suit. Dramatically James Bond-like and cinematic, this set the mood for the rest of the show. Oversized pockets adorned almost every look, as well as utility-belts and Max Mara’s signature court shoe. The fashion house exudes power-dressing in their latest collection.
Experimenting with colour, the pieces range from blacks and greys to pastel purples and blues. The pastel pieces felt especially unique, blending together a typically masculine silhouette with a feminine colour palette. In comparison to their more beige-toned SS19, this is a fresh-look for the brand.
In true James-Bond-esque style, ties were essential to the utility-suit look – but keeping to their theme of adding a more feminine edge by using satin or combining with a super-cinched waist. Surprisingly, polka-dots made an appearance in collection, in draping dresses and skirt and top sets. This is the only part of the collection that falls flat, feeling out of place with the rest of the 007-inspired designs.
