JUST as in the men’s show in June, the Dolce & Gabbana SS19 show at Milan Fashion Week played on the idea of DNA. In an implication that the Dolce & Gabbana label has no need to evolve, the designs celebrate the brand’s own unmistakeable, inimitable essence by focussing on the things that really encompass its values.
The SS19 collection was therefore appropriately on brand, with bold floral prints and headdresses, black lace ballgowns and basque lingerie, Sicilian peasant inspired dresses, and conspicuous references to Italian Catholicism.
One value that this collection deliberately emphasised is appreciation of the Dolce & Gabbana community, in a project claiming “the family is our point of reference” under the hashtag #DGFamily.
The sheer size of the SS19 collection was notable, evidence that the brand’s “family” is numerous and devoted. This family is undoubtedly star-studded; among the models were actress Monica Bellucci and Eva Herzigova, singer-songwriter Carla Bruni, and actress-filmmaker Isabella Rossellini.
However, these women made up only a part of the D&G family. Models of all ages, shapes, sizes, races and types showcased the brand’s unparalleled yet accessible style in a show where inclusion didn’t feel like tokenism, but felt real, authentic and natural.
