Chinese paintings on auction at Christie’s Hong Kong


CHRISTIE’S Hong Kong, the eminent art auction house, have a wide selection of Chinese painting on sale documenting the evolution of oriental art from the classical to the contemporary period. Chinese painters have tapped into the accumulated wealth of knowledge of classical Chinese artists and reinterpreted some traditional techniques to create new, different pieces that do have a few commonality with classical works.

The works of Li Huayi, a contemporary Chinese artist, are one of the highlights this season. He has been influenced by the Song and Yuan dynasties, and particularly landscape paintings from those eras, due to the serenity and purity communicated by those pieces. He combines his love of traditional landscape painting with modern methods, including abstract expressionism. Some of the paintings that have inspired Li are on sale this season alongside his own.

Li Huayi is most well known for the splashed ink technique to depict mountains and cliffs. Zhang Daqian is another artist associated with this ink technique, and whose use of the medium has influenced Li’s use, and his works are also offer this season.
