Opening in February 2019, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams will trace the history of Dior from 1947 to the present day, exploring the House’s origins as well as its development under the six artistic directors who have followed in the footsteps of the eminent couturier. The exhibition will showcase over 500 objects including pieces from the Dior archives and the V&A’s own extensive Couture collections. Unique garments will be displayed alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, perfume, make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions.

One section of the exhibition will explore Christian Dior’s relationship with British culture, including his fascination with the great houses and gardens of Britain, and his love of Savile Row suits. A Christian Dior dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday will also be on display.

Arranged across 11 sections, the exhibition will offer an extended biography of Christian Dior and a study of the influence and inheritance of one of the most globally recognised names in fashion. From the ground-breaking impact of The New Look to the unlikely sources of inspiration behind the House’s aesthetic (horticulture, 18th Century decoration and stately homes to name just a few), this is an unmissable opportunity to explore the enduring influence of Christian Dior — and get close to some of the most spectacular dresses of all time.
