Following years with Sonnabend Gallery, acclaimed photographer Candida Höfer has joined Sean Kelly Gallery. From Düsseldorf is Höfer’s first exhibition with the gallery and her first in New York since 2013.
All photographs in this exhibition were taken in Dusseldorf—where Höfer first studied photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher, who remain an important influence on her work to this day. Included in this show are her signature carefully composed, large-scale colour images of elaborate Rococo and Baroque interiors.
Alongside these Höfer presents a new body of work utilising extreme angles and close-ups, reflecting a much more abstract interest in architectural detail and structure. They form a striking contrast when viewed next to her photographs of ornate interiors. Yet, both sets of images maintain a highly formal, distanced approach to the subject characteristic of Höfer’s work.
