Thoughtful Serenity at Montcalm Mayfair

NESTLED on a handsome Georgian crescent stands the Montcalm Mayfair, a place of elegance and refinement, things one comes to expect from the Montcalm Autograph Collection. Maybe less expected is that this gem of serenity and calm is just a seven minute walk (or a four minute canter – I know as I tried it) from Selfridges, Park Lane and the general hubbub of west Oxford Street.

As soon as you arrive, greeted by what have to be some of London’s friendliest doorman, you know you are in for a treat of a stay. The lobby is so inviting, a botanical theme (a nod to the areas history which was once an ancient forest) pervades and weaves, from the floral hand painted ceiling mural (Will Foster Studios) to the myriad of plants and sylvan touches. Chandeliers appear as if blossoming and walls are lined with earthy tones, the paragon of English heritage aesthetics.

Despite outward appearances the hotel has 150 rooms including 30 suites and yet retains the quiet intimacy of a much smaller hotel, a gentleness and attention to detail that is so often lost in larger properties. Our room over looked the crescent and was comfort level 10/10, Italian Frette linens, Egyptian cotton and Bamfords toiletries abound, it is an effort to raise oneself and leave the room.

However those that do will be rewarded with a super breakfast which can be taken in the bright and verdant surroundings of the foyer, a splendid place to watch the comings and goings while you muse over a matcha. The hotel is well-placed for some of the capital’s finest restaurants however supper can be taken on-site (should you not want to leave – which is entirely possible) at Lilli by Akira Back, where Michelin-starred chef Akira Back blends Korean/Japanese influences with classic European dishes.

Pool in Yatra Spa

It would be remiss not to visit the hotels Yatra Spa, so postprandial and donning my soft, fluffy robe and slippers, I head down to the basement. The calmness and tranquility of the hotel extends thoroughly to the Yatra and where I experienced my first infrared sauna, hopped into the jacuzzi and spend probably more time than my schedule allows, prostrate on a spa lounger listening to the woodland soundscapes that fill the senses.

Those of a more energetic disposition can use the small, but well equipped gym. Back to reality came all too quickly and I resolved to return to this small slice of heaven soon.
