STRIPPING looks down to only what is necessary is the way Matthew M. Williams approached the pre-spring 2023 collection for Givenchy. Focusing on presenting the essentials to any wardrobe through his own archetypes, the usual buzz surrounding every inch of the clothes has been muted this season and instead purely focuses on contrasts.
Think precision tailoring, distressed denim and animal print with an injection of block moments of black.
Delving straight into the idea of staples, womenswear sways between crisp white shirts, ribbed turtlenecks and slim fit trousers catering to a more formal, slick aesthetic, while cargo trousers and crystal-embellished denim relate to Williams’ recognisable streetwear orientated taste.
Adding a more playful depth to the clothes, an archival ocelot print is re-introduced to the palette, appearing on blouses, dresses and overcoats, while a zebra motif comes to life through textured sequins and pearl beadings, offering ready-to-wear an element of that famous Givenchy savoir-faire.
Though not a main collection, Williams doesn’t stray away from the glamorous nature of evening-wear, presenting a notable red gown cut with an open back finished with a silver chain halter neck, as well as a satin bustier dress with sensual cut-outs.
Recently announcing the postponing of his debut couture show for the brand, these two may be possible hints at what is to come from the young designer but with no definite answer, we can only hope that we are offered more of this.
Mirroring the same juxtaposition of balancing casual with smart, the menswear side to pre-spring 2023 celebrates the versatility of tailoring. Taking this traditionally well-fitted approach to design and embracing a more relaxed vibe, leather jackets are matched with wide trousers, and sweatpants are seen with innovative knitwear.
A seminal part to any of Williams’ collections for Givenchy are his accessories. The Antigona enters the sphere with the Cube lock, while the G Hobo, 4G Soft and Kenny are reimagined in soft calfskin to match the same laid-back energy as the looks.
Jewellery returns in white resin pearls to weave a link between ready-to-wear, creating an inclusive feeling that ensures a coherent flow from the top to the bottom of your look.
Taking a new turn for pre-spring 2023, Givenchy’s collection is more wearable than his previous offerings. There is no over-complications but rather that cool, effortless take that we all yearn to exude from our outfits and more importantly, the type of cool that Williams is triumphant at.
