THE continued domination of social media has thoroughly combusted the tightly wired circuit of traditional beauty in recent years, reviving a multitude of viral make-up trends that were firmly buried in the make-up graveyard, from frosty blue eyeshadow to soap eyebrows to name a few.
The reigning mode of silky skin, carved cheekbones and thick, tangled eyelashes have lost its crown to a more unbridled approach to beauty, a sense of play we have all been craving for as a collective.
MAC Glow Play Blush in Groovy
Perhaps one of the more curious styles to arise from TikTok’s temple of trends is the lipstick blush hack, which entails smearing crimson-hued lipstick onto bare skin and applying a veil of foundation on top. Concocted to create a more innate, lit from within flush, the method expertly melds the blush and foundation together, avoiding an artificial-appearing slash of deep blush.
Though the trick is slightly tedious, it continues to permeate the platform, bleeding into the equally interesting fashion of sunburn-style blush. Also emerging from TikTok’s trajectory, the trend involves taking a strawberry or terracotta-toned blush and precisely placing the pigment across the nose, onto the apples and generously sweeping into the hairline, to echo a healthy warm summer stain as opposed to a sore, conspicuously pink sunburn.

Terry Barber, Director of Makeup Artistry at MAC, gives his opinion and tips on the blossoming trend: “From a sweet cherubic flush to an outdoorsy sweep across the nose, blush is most definitely back. From rose to rust, whatever your skin tone. Teamed with glowing skin and some fake freckles, it’s a new and fresh alternative to the power contour.”
MAC Powder Blush in Fever
MAC offer a kaleidoscope of rosy-hues to master the sunburn blush, formulated in the bouncy and buildable Glow Play creams or the ultra-smooth, long-lasting powder blushes. I like to lightly brush the sheertone blush in Pinch Me, a soft brick-stained rose shade, across my nose and cheeks to seamlessly replicate a burnt flush.
For darker skin tones, the matte powder blush in Fever – an intense, damson-tinted plum – emulates a similar effect, enlivening the skin with a warm, post-holiday luminosity.
MAC Glow Play Blush in Groovy
For those who usually swerve dusky shades, the Glow Play Blush in Totally Synced is a buildable, bubble-gum-flecked lilac that varnishes the cheeks in a profusion of pearly shimmer, while Groovy is an electric coral, an almost watermelon-like hue that alights the skin in a juicy red sunburn.

If your taking the easing of travel restrictions more tentatively, and prudently, opting for a staycation this year, this trend will imitate a complexion spent soaking the up Spanish sun, flushed with a delicious, suntinted glow.
