Glass experiences Nikkei cuisine at Chotto Matte

MERGING Japanese and Peruvian cultures, Chotto Matte aims to deliver their guests the ultimate taste of Nikkei cuisine. Located in the busy Soho, the restaurant invites the passers-by with its artistic, eye-catching design and lively atmosphere to experience the range of their unique dishes.

Majority of Chotto Matte’s menu orbits around fresh fish and meat. The impressive selection will allow anyone to find something they would like to try but those who are strictly vegetarian will not be disappointed as the restaurant catered an impressive amount of plant-based dishes.

Around eight dishes are recommended as an order for two. Based on small plates, Chotto Matte invites the guests to dive in and try variety of their courses rather than limiting themselves with just a couple. To make the choosing process easier for those who get overwhelmed with the list the restaurant offers set sharing menus priced from £50 to £110 per person.

Our dinner has started with padrón peppers and BBQ edamame followed by sea bass ceviche and spicy tuna sashimi with caramelised nashi pear, crispy filo aji truffle, wasabi soy, shiso cress. The food was perfectly delicate and complimented each other extremely well. The combination of fresh fish with the garnish made the starters beyond exciting.

Next to follow were the dishes from robata grill. We opted for rocoto cauliflower wings from the vegetarian selection and black cod aji miso in chilli miso marinade, yuzu and chives. The cod straight away became my favourite course about which I will dream for the foreseeable future, it was tender, had hints of sweetness coming through and you just simply could not get enough of it.

The part which I was extremely excited for was the sushi. Me and my guest shared vegetable maki, which was delicious but quickly got overshadowed with the dragon roll. Served arranged into a shape of a dragon, the roll was filled with prawn tempura, salmon, avocado and unagi sauce. What is there not to love?

The selection of drinks at Chotto Matte also does not disappoint. From flor de manzana based on Absolute Mango vodka, sake and passionfruit to the toki highball made with Suntory Toki whisky, St Germain elderflower and mint.

As big fans of cocktails, me and my guest tried a yuzu martini – an interesting and unusual combination. We were very pleasantly surprised with a neon yellow coloured drink with refreshing and slightly sour flavours.
