“I’VE BEEN feeling very intrigued by the idea of how my vision of woman’s clothes will evolve in the future. But I don’t want to wait. I want to find out now”, stated Huishan Zhang when talking about his most recent SS23 collection – a showcase set with an objective to create a wardrobe for the 22nd century.
Minimalistic couture structured through a utopian lens is what this fresh showcase can be referred to. Just look at how shift dresses are cut using asymmetric volumes that kick out at the hip—these elements transform two different types of apparel into a new, exciting hybrid.
Both daytime and evening attires accumulated rich and bold colour palettes. The runway was illuminated by a blaze of electric reds, oranges, yellows, and greens – a nod to the neon lights illuminating the city streets at night.
Inspired by a sci-fi romantic drama titled ‘2046’, the prints have also added to the retro-futuristic element of the collection. Almost as magnified through a microscope, they’ve also illuminated this new geometric era of the brand, yet still capturing the motion of simplicity Zhang was going for.
This reduced language is continued even in the smallest of the ornaments, such as zips and tabs. Every intricate detail continues to unfold a glimpse of a utopian future that seems to extract the brand from its traditions.
