Inserting the fun into fashion, Glass presents Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro

“THERE is a natural longing for heartwarming feelings right now,” says Creative Director Jonathan Anderson of Loewe. The combination of the cold weather, short days and the on-going pandemic has left us all somewhat deflated, and the yearning for human contact continues.

However, inspired by the 1988 film My Neighbor Totoro by Hayao Miyazaki and the friendship between the characters, Loewe have set out to create a capsule collection ensured to bring a smile to your face.

“When I think of a movie that affords me that kind of solace, speaking just as directly to a child as it does to an adult, that movie is My Neighbour Totoro… [you] cannot possibly forget it.”

Partnering with the film studio, Studio Ghibli, where the film was originally animated and directed in Tokyo, the Spanish fashion brand are launching Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro. The limited-edition collection transports the film and its vibrant characters onto a range of clothes, accessories and bags, celebrating the iconography and qualities onto luxury fashion.

“The connection between Loewe and Studio Ghibli is this mutual love of craft and artisanal techniques, expressed in our respective languages.” Anderson continues, “The connection between Loewe and My Neighbor Totoro, on the other hand, is the mutual connection with nature, the world outdoors and a sense of perpetual invention.”

The collection flows naturally and creates a youthful feel to the clothes. The colour and playfulness is something missing from the industry currently, so Anderson has given us something we didn’t know we needed. A particular highlight is seeing the characters on the leather handbag – which was executed through a special technique called intarsia.

“The message is one of dreamy serenity and hands-on creativity – of being at one with nature and with one’s own inner child – which is especially important right now and, I think, always will be.”
