AW21: Victoria Beckham

VICTORIA Beckham has cast an “optimistic but realistic” eye over the future of fashion for her off-schedule AW21 collection that was all about breaking the rules.

Like many of us, Beckham, it seems, has been dreaming about a brighter future. Her latest offering – showcased at London’s Hayward Gallery – captures the joy of going out, with emphasis on wear and practicality that nods to our current times.

Show-stopping glitter boots accessorised a minimised 21-look collection of pared-back styles. Trenches and overcoats infused military sensibility with Beckham’s signature cut while flowing georgette and jersey dresses injected a cheerful pop of colour. Familiar tailoring was geared towards comfort and came matched with crisp button-up shirts and roomy tonal trousers.

“Throughout, there’s a sense of the hybrid,” says Beckham, “of crossing between formal and casual, shifting between seasons, of challenging the norm.” And, while at first glance, the line-up may appear quite the opposite, this season, Beckham’s proposal was anything but safe, rather, quietly rebellious, veering away from passing trends to focus on layerable, versatile pieces that could, and should, be treasured for a lifetime.
