Reiko Kaneko’s Christmas range

Although it is not quite December yet, it seems impossible to ignore that Christmas is just around the corner. And this is the one time of the year where it is acceptable, if not even expected, to indulge yourself in camp decorations of the house – or perhaps even a glitter makeover, if you like. However, if the whole metallic, glittery tinsel-thing is not really to your liking, Glass has come across some lovely alternative ornaments that will help get your house (and you) into the festive spirits.

British-Japanese designer Reiko Kaneko graduated from Central St Martins, and established her design studio in 2007. Her works have a deep-seated interest in the materiality and transcends an extraordinary almost fragile beautiful, yet still with a high level of usability. Kaneko’s range of Christmas ornamentations are no different. They also possess a fragile yet strong beauty, and are completely stripped off the traditional tackiness (like it or loath it) we often associate with Christmas.

The simplicity of Kaneko’s design is what makes them strong, and especially the minimalistic snowflakes are examples of this. In their simple geometry and colour (white) they create an almost iconographic shape. Kaneko has also create her version of the more traditional coloured baubles, but here kept in a delicate frosted colour scheme that gives them a very sophisticated expression. An absolute favourite is the bauble-range with animal pictures. They are still very pretty ornaments but also have just the right amount of humour, which is needed this time of year.

Happy decorating!
