British winners at 2014 Sony World Photography Awards

Three British photographers were prize winners at the 2014 Sony Photography Awards. The winners are Spencer Murphy, Guy Martin and Amanda Harman who, respectively, were named Campaign Photographer of the Year; Current Affairs Photographer of the Year; and Still Life Photographer of the Year. The winners were announced at gala ceremony last week.

Murphy, who has contributed to many publications and has exhibited widely, landed the title with his image series, Channel 4 Racing – The Original Extreme Sport which depicted a number of portraits of jump jockeys post-race, underlining the risks jockeys undergo in pursuit of their sport.

Guy Martin’s winning portfolio, Gezi Park, demonstrates the collective attempt of thousands protestors gathering to demonstrate and resist against the construction of another shopping district on one of the few slivers of green space still available in Istanbul. With a degree in Documentary Photography, Martin seeks inspiration in regions in periods of transition, conflicts and revolutions.

Having worked on a range of commissions, residencies and projects for galleries, Amanda Harman received her prize with Garden Stories, Hidden Labours capturing beautiful images of unintended or ‘accidental’ still lives; with her project Harman aims to to make visible the unseen and often unsung work of the gardeners, by revealing small signs of the day-to-day, such as the tending of plants; their protection from insects; disease and weather; and the gathering of flowers and crops.

All the winning series will be on display at Somerset House, London as part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.
