PFW SS21: Ami

FINDING a silver lining in the middle of the darkness, Ami put the City of Lights in the spotlight this season. Paying homage to its hometown, the men and womenswear spring-summer 2021 collection was presented on the quay of the River Seine overlooking Ile Saint-Louis giving us a glimpse of the freedom we so yearn for again.

Presenting for the first time during the womenswear schedule of Paris Fashion Week, the brand took a step forward in the search of hope. Not only showing their first full womenswear collection alongside their menswear during this period, but also being brave enough to present a physical show – and one that was truly magical for that – Ami made us realise that fashion’s ability to create escapism is one that shouldn’t be forgotten about.

“I believe that a fashion show will always remain the most magical rendez-vous to present a collection … and this one was a celebration of Paris and its inhabitants” stated Creative Director and Founder Alexandre Mattiussi.

“Ami is anchored in real life: I wanted to highlight the human need to be social, to meet and interact, with a message of hope,” explained Mattiussi.

And, he did exactly that! The SS21 collection gave us hope that one day we will live restriction-less again.

The clothes were balanced in being both utilitarian, and therefore arguably realistic in how our lives have already changed, but there was also a ‘je ne sais quoi’, an element of mystery – one that I believe thrives in the night time.

There was a hint of sex appeal that was threaded through the collection with relaxed cut suits that were worn with bralettes underneath, cropped sweater vests for men and even in cross front halter-neck dress exposing most of the chest. Overall, there was something exciting about how Ami sees the future.

Maybe it’s the not-knowing, but the feeling of everything being ok that Mattiussi was able to bring out in his clothes that made this collection so endearing.

There has always been something very special about the clothes by Mattiussi, they have the ability to be both effortlessly chic in the quintessentially Parisian manner whilst always remaining contemporary.

The SS21 collection made me excited for the future and ultimately made me want to be one of the Ami women walking beside the River Seine in the City of Lights full of optimism.
