Kate and Lila Moss front Fendi’s latest Peekaboo campaign

THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER duo Kate and Lila Moss come together to feature in Fendi’s latest Peekaboo campaign.

The Peekaboo silhouette debuted in 2009 during the Italian House’s spring-summer 2009 runway show, where the bag received much celebration and praise for its attempts at reimagining contemporary accessories.

A symbol of Fendi womanhood and exceptional Roman craftsmanship, the silhouette was designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi and displays the Fendi Selleria stitch, a technique passed down to Venturini Fendi from her grandmother Adele Casagrande.

The Peekaboo’s intimate intergenerational history is narrated by Kate and Lila as they move around the set, dancing, laughing and sharing secrets, practices demonstrative of the essence of a mother-daughter relationship.

The bag silhouette is clean and minimalist with its strong geometric lines, but feminine and soft with its unique curves.

Playful and sophisticated at the same time, the Peekaboo bag is functional and chic. It displays a mid-century-like frame, however, modernised with contemporary leather artistry and the skilled craftsmanship of Fendi’s ateliers.

The Peekaboo is simultaneously rigid and supple, with its construction materialised from leather embellished with a metal turn-lock, which once opened, allows the bag structure to drop, giving its upper half a smile-like shape hinting at its playful nature.

“There was an invasion of bags on the catwalk everywhere at the time, so I really wanted to create a bag that only a real leather goods maker like FENDI could possibly make.

It was the moment to set things straight with a new classic. I wanted to evoke the beauty of a vintage bag with a lock, but for the first time make it about the movement of the bag. At FENDI, lightness has always been so important. When you think of a FENDI coat, sometimes the inside is even more accurate and precise than the outside.

Things are reversible. You can see it is FENDI because of the way it moves – because it is light, and it follows the body. With the Peekaboo, I really wanted to produce that idea in a bag. That’s why I selected a very soft leather, as the bag was shown open and inside you could reveal a different colour of a very beautiful glove leather. It is a bag to be experienced: when you put your hands inside a Peekaboo, you can feel some of the softest leather in the world.” — Silvia Venturini Fendi
